Our family has started treating Sundays for what they are, regular extravagant holidays! We truly get all our shopping, cleaning, etc... finished on all other days of the week and make Sunday a big deal family together day. Meal times are planned like Christmas and Easter. We pull out the good china and set up the feast in the dining room - who does that anymore? We prepare a feast, the table, light candles and spend good family time enjoying each other's company. The kids absolutely love it! Of course, we attend Mass as well which is the true feast. Our family is spread so thin all the other days of the week that we really need Sunday to be a mini retreat from the world.
I am the recipient of a great cook book my mother-in-law passed on to me with real old fashioned Italian recipes. It is written by a grandmother to her grandchildren in her own hand. She explains what she does in the kitchen and how she prepares her authentic Italian food. There are some cheeses that I've never heard of and don't know where to find, but I think they must be like mozzarella because that one cheese is nowhere to be found in the cookbook.
I've had this treasure for a while, but am pulling it out lately to try recipes for our feast days. She does take short cuts and DOESN'T make her pasta from scratch. My family loves the fresh pasta I make. It is a true labor of love when I make it, but it goes fast. The smiles I see on the kids' faces are worth the work.
My dh feels loved when I put my time into these meals. No matter what happens in life, if there is homemade pasta or some italian feast in the works, life is good!
Oh, and I can't forget that today is Divine Mercy Sunday. We'll have to finish up our left over chaplets and prepare for graces in abundance!
