Spelunking

The day was too beautiful to not go for a romp along the river gathering autumn leaves. The weeds blocking the path to the "cave" have died away so the kids are ready for many adventures here. Rocky found some great sticks to beat the daylights out of the remaining reeds that dared stand in his way. (The spirit of little boys never ceases to amaze me.) The scouting was cut short by Nobby who thought she could make every advance her older brothers made. We also had to venture back within an hour, so we quickly returned to the path.

We then came home and read Tomie dePaola's "Here We All Are" and after dinner we read "What a Year". Both of these books are sequels to his "26 Fairmount Avenue". The children were perfectly content to sit and listen to me read for hours. It was a great afternoon. We learned how to set leaves in wax and how to make "pop-eyes". We will likely try this out at breakfast this morning.

Today the kids woke up planning a picnic at the river so we would have more time to play at the cave. I suppose I will have to check my calendar to see if this is something we can do. I suppose I could cancel all my other pressing appointments. Everyone still appears to have clean underwear, so the laundry could wait one more day. We could do our spelling tests in the sand. I think that means yes. :-)

Well, I'm glad you took the bait! Maybe you will read the book to find out! My work wasn't near as cute as Tomie dePaola's illustrations. I'll give you a hint - the pop-eyes are made of bread and egg. Now if I tell you any more wouldn't I be accused of plaigerism? :-)
