The littlest children and I are starting a winter garden of sorts. The first project is easy enough. We've simply taken the butt of a few carrots and a celery, placed them in a dish of water and are waiting for them to sprout leaves. One of them that already had leaves is impressing the children. We are easily impressed. :-)
The second project will be sprouting vines from a sweet potato. I can't go wrong here. They sprout easily enough in a drawer without my even trying. How hard can this be for us to do?
From there I'll have each of them make a simple container garden. We may then try to force some bulbs or possibly sprout mushrooms. From what I understand they require no upkeep! Please correct me if I'm wrong.
I got a few other ideas from the Atlanta Botanical Garden and a friend's garden. It is a wonder how nicely plants will do when they have a little attention. Hopefully these small beginnings will give the children (and myself) a little confidence so that we can cultivate some success next spring.
My friend Sara at www.ashowerofroses.blogspot.com tagged me in a game. I was supposed to count the sixth picture folder in my computer and pull up the sixth picture in the folder and post it on my blog. Unfortunately, the picture I pulled up on the computer was a not so very flattering one of my daughter Bronky. I tried a different computer and pulled up another not so very flattering picture of my daughter Tink. Were the picture of myself I wouldn't have a care, but since they are of others I'll respect them and not participate in the game this time. But, thanks Sara! This also tells me that I need to do some deleting of my picture files!

Stop taking those unflattering pictures of those beautiful girls! ;-)
The picture of Bronky was after I pulled braids from her hair and the resulting afro. It was a memory we would like to treasure but not to share. The one of Tink was at dinner when her boyfriend was over and I wanted to chronicle the event on film. She wanted to joke around by sticking an asparagus up her nose. Again, another memorable treasure, but not one she would like to share.:-)
